Biography

Dr Lucy-Ann Buckley is a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Law and the Vice Dean for Teaching and Learning in the College of Business, Public Policy and Law (currently on sabbatical).

Dr Buckley specialises in equality law, labour law and family property. She is currently an expert advisor to the States of Guernsey in relation to the development of new multi-ground equality legislation. She previously contributed to the Joint Statement Towards Inclusive Social Protection Systems Supporting the Full and Effective Participation of Persons With Disabilities adopted by the International Labour Organisation in 2019.

Dr Buckley previously held positions with the University of Warwick and the University of Limerick. She holds a BCL and LLM by research from University College Cork, a BCL (masters degree) from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. She is also a qualified solicitor.

Research Interests

Dr Buckley's research is strongly socio-legal and considers law in its broader social, political and organisational context. She is particularly interested in the social impact of legal rules and decision-making. Her work is informed and driven by a social justice perspective, particularly a concern for gender equity in the family and employment contexts, and more recently, for disability equality.

Dr Buckley's publications can be classified under three broad headings: family property and the division of assets on divorce and separation; labour law, particularly employment equality; and commercial law, especially as it intersects with family law and labour law.

Dr Buckley has published in a range of leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Legal Studies, the Canadian Journal of Family Law, the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, the International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family, and the Industrial Law Journal. She has also published in leading national law journals, such as the Irish Jurist and the Dublin University Law Journal.

At NUI Galway, Dr Buckley is an affiliate of the Centre for Disability Law and Policy, and is also a member of Gender ARC and the Gender and Public Policy Cluster at the Whitaker Institute. Externally, she is a member of the Northern/Irish Feminist Judgments Project, a multi-disciplinary project based in the University of Durham, the University of Kent and the London School of Economics. She is also a member of the
Berkeley Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Study Group, where she is a member of the Sexual Harassment Working Group and the Disability Rights Working Group.

Dr Buckley is currently supervising two funded PhD students in areas related to disability equality and access to employment. She welcomes inquiries from potential doctoral students in relation to equality law and policy (including but not limited to gender and disability issues), labour law, and family law (particularly family property).
