The impact of the recent recession on Irish air travel

The Irish government and the European Union engaged in an extensive series of investment programmes in transport infrastructure during the 1990s and 2000s using EU structural funds and Irish government exchequer funding.

The provision of regional airports can provide regions and communities with fast access to national and international transport networks that are necessary for economic growth and development. In periods of expansion, small and medium sized communities can experience increases in traffic volumes and expansion in the number of service offerings by carriers at their regional airport. However these communities are often first to be dropped by carriers when downturns in the economic cycle are experienced.
