Biography

2001 - 2004 PhD, NUI Galway.

1998 - 2001 BA, Political Science & Sociology, Geography (1st Hons), NUI Galway.

1995 - 1996 BA, Fine Art (1st Hons), Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork.

1992 - 1995 National Diploma in Art (Distinction), Crawford College of Art & Design, Cork.

Research Interests

Having made my way into sociology via the visual arts, I have a keen interest in how these fields interact in the form of socially-engaged art. My research as a sociologist (and previously as an artist) focuses on degrees of freedom, i.e. not freedom as an abstract figure of thought or normative ideal, but rather freedom as an agonistic arena of practice which is conditioned and constrained by historically-constituted relations of power. I am particularly interested in relations of inclusion/exclusion, histories of childhood, governmentality and biopower, technologies of subjectivation, and attempts to govern the excesses of competitive performance.

At once an ethos and a method of inquiry, Two Fuse is a collaborative platform that brings Kevin Ryan and Fiona Whelan together through a commitment to thinking across the boundaries of disciplinary enclosures. Two Fuse is also a way of acknowledging the collaborative nature of inquiry – that the pursuit of knowledge and understanding entails both direct and indirect encounters and exchanges.
