Biography

Curriculum Vitae -

Brian Hughes is a Professor in Psychology, and a specialist in stress psychophysiology, health psychology, the public understanding of psychology and science, and the psychology of social issues. His latest book is The Psychology of Brexit: From Psychodrama to Behavioural Science (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).

Previous books include Conceptual and Historical Issues in Psychology (London: Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2012), Rethinking Psychology: Good Science, Bad Science, Pseudoscience (Palgrave, 2016) and Psychology in Crisis (Palgrave, 2018). As well as blogging at The Science Bit, he writes the 'Homoeostasis Disruptor' column at Psychology Today. He tweets as @b_m_hughes

A prominent advocate for scientific psychology, evidence-based policy, and the role of psychology in society, he writes widely on the psychology of empiricism and of empirically disputable claims, especially as they pertain to science, health, medicine, and politics.

His experimental research focuses on psychological stress (particularly its impact on cardiovascular psychophysiology, immunity, and health) and on psychosocial moderators of stress processes (such as social support, cognition, and personality). He has conducted extensive research into the ways human cardiovascular responses habituate during repeated or sustained stress exposure, helping to explain how some people are resilient to the long-term health effects of chronic stress.

Professor Brian Hughes received his PhD and BA degrees from NUI Galway, and an Ed.M. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

He has held visiting academic appointments at the Universities of Leiden (Netherlands), Birmingham (UK), and Missouri (USA), at King's College London (UK), and at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He served as President of the international Stress and Anxiety Research Society (STAR) from 2014 to 2016. He sits on the editorial boards of a number of international journals of psychophysiology, health psychology, and behavioural medicine, and is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Psychophysiology.

In 2015, he was made a Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland (FPsSI) in recognition of his services to Irish psychology. In 2016 he received the Career Contribution Award from the International Council of Stress Management Professionals (ICSMP) "in recognition of positive contribution towards research, development, and application of stress management." In 2007
he received the Early Career Achievement Award from the international Stress and Anxiety Research Society "for scientific achievement in the field of stress and anxiety research", and in 2009 he received a President's Award for Teaching Excellence at NUI Galway. Most recently, in 2019, he received the Inaugural PSI Member Award for Contribution to Research in Psychology.

Research Interests

Brian Hughes's experimental research focuses on the physical impact of mental stress, with a particular focus on the cardiovascular system. Click here to view a video that describes this work.

He was the lead investigator on StressBio, an innovative research programme on stress reactivity funded in 2017 by the Irish Research Council (EUR0.22 million). Past research has been supported by agencies such as the Irish Heart Foundation, the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the National Suicide Review Group, the Health Research Board, the Higher Education Authority, and the National Science Centre of Poland.

Brian Hughes is a prominent advocate for scientific psychology, evidence-based policy, scientific outreach, and the role of psychology in society. He holds a Master's degree in public science education, awarded by the State University of New York, and is the author of a number of books, including The Psychology of Brexit: From Psychodrama to Behavioural Science (2016), Psychology in Crisis (2018), and Rethinking Psychology: Good Science, Bad Science, Pseudoscience (2016). He was made a Fellow of the Psychological Society of Ireland in 2015. In 2016, he received a Career Contribution Award from the International Council of Stress Management Professionals (Australia).
