MOSES feeding into OECD efforts to produce experimental ocean economy satellite accounts

MOSES lead partner NUI Galway participated in an online seminar and discussion on “Ocean Economy Measurement and Satellite Accounts” organised by the Scientific and Technological Policy Division of the OECD on May 1st. The meeting provided an update on activities from the OECD Secretariat and was organised to gather input on the ocean economy measurement exercise that they are developing. Feedback from the meeting is being used to finalise a list of ocean related activities and characteristic products of relevance for a suite of internationally comparable statistics. It is further proposed to produce a pilot data collection programme for an OECD experimental ocean economy satellite account.

Stephen Hynes of NUI Galway outlined the MOSES project to the virtual participants and shared with them how the MOSES database of ocean economy indicators can be used to establish the proportion of marine output in a number of NACE codes at a regional level across the Atlantic Arc Member States. The list of indicators and proxies considered for the MOSES project are the data types being envisaged for use to estimate some of the ocean coefficients by the OECD in their pilot exercise and the database from MOSES was subsequently shared with the team from the Scientific and Technological Policy Division of the OECD working on this project. The MOSES partners look forward to seeing how this important work by the OECD progresses and are delighted to be able support their efforts to produce comparable across all OECD member countries.
