The Case Method of Teaching

George Kester is the Martel Professor of Finance at Washington and Lee University (Lexington, Virginia, U.S.A.). He formerly held the William H. Dunkak Chair in Finance at Bucknell University in the U.S. During the summer months, he teaches postgraduate case courses in corporate finance in Slovenia at the University of Ljubljana and in Australia at the University of Melbourne. He has also held visiting professorships at the National University of Singapore, University of Malaya, University of the South Pacific, and Monash South Africa. During the first semester of 2009-10, he is a visiting professor at NUI, Galway.He has published two books and numerous articles published in academic and professional journals. He is an associate editor of the Asian Journal of Business and Accounting and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Financial Education and Advances in Financial Education.

Workshop Objective
To provide hands-on introduction to the case method of teaching, including its benefits and limitations, and various approaches to integrating cases into business courses.

Preparation
This workshop designed is for anyone interested in learning more about the case method of teaching. To gain insight into the benefits of this pedagogical technique from the perspective of students, workshop participants are asked to read a classic Harvard Business School case, The O.M. Scott & Sons Company prior to the workshop and, during the workshop, discuss their analysis and recommendations. The workshop is not business discipline-specific. The O.M. Scott & Sons case can be successfully taught in a variety of business courses, including strategic management, marketing, accounting, and finance.

The O.M. Scott & Sons case can be picked up from Laura Regan, room 368 in the Cairnes Building. It can also be mailed to workshop participants outside of NUI, Galway. Call (091-492308) or email Laura Regan (laura.regan@nuigalway.ie) for a copy.
