PhD Module: Professional Development Publishing Research and Preparing for the Academic Job Market
Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th October 2012, NUI Galway
The course is open to all PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, both internal and external to NUI Galway. If you are currently supervising a student or post doc who may be interested in attending, please forward this information to them.
Do you know the answer to the following questions?
How does a PhD viva work, and how can I prepare for it?
What is an impact factor?
What do journal reviewers look for in a manuscript?
What do I do with a rejected manuscript?
What is the difference between a tenure track and non-tenure track position?
Why do British academics lie awake worrying about the REF (formally RAE)?
How do you write an academic CV?
If you do not know the answers then you are not adequately prepared to look for an academic job. Once you finish your PhD you will be competing for employment in a highly competitive international market. The goal of this course is to give you the knowledge of what you need to do to be competitive for academic and non-academic positions on completion of your PhD, and provide information on what you need to be doing before you finish your PhD to improve your employment prospects. Although there are 5 ECT credits available for this course, you are highly encouraged to attend even if you do not need the credits.
For more information, see the course outline below. If you have any further enquiries about the course itself, please contact Dr. Paul OConnor paul.oconnor@nuigalway.ie
