This seminar will introduce the basics of Open Source Software (OSS), examining the increasing role that OSS is seen to represent in the software sphere. It will examine contributory factors to the exponential growth over the past few years, highlighting the motivation of the software programmer, the role that the different licences play and it will compare and contrast Open Source to other software. It will also examine Open Source as an avenue for Open Innovation, and discuss the possibility that Open Source can herald a new organisational structure due to its collaborative nature.
