What is the workshop about?

Integrated Reporting (IR) seeks to redefine corporate accountability around a broader agenda, encompassing intellectual, human, social and natural capital, combining financial and sustainability reporting. IR is a process founded on integrated thinking, which results in a concise report about how an organisation’s strategy, governance, performance and prospects lead to the creation of value in the short, medium and long term. The aim of this workshop, hosted jointly by Chartered Accountants Ireland and NUI Galway, is to initiate an informed discussion on Integrated Reporting in Ireland.

IR is currently being developed and promoted by the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC), a global coalition of regulators, investors, companies, standard setters, the accounting profession and NGOs. In December 2013, the IIRC released the first version of its IR Framework. There is significant interest in this development internationally, as evidenced by the involvement of over 100 major corporations and 34 investor organisations in the IIRC’s pilot programme, including Microsoft, Unilever, Danone, Coca Cola, Volvo, ENI, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, SAP, Repsol and Telefonica.
Who should attend the workshop? This workshop will be of value to preparers and users of financial statements, including financial and management accountants, financial managers, CFOs, investors, auditors, regulators, consultants, company stakeholders and others with an interest in the future of corporate reporting in Ireland and internationally.

What will you learn at the workshop?

The workshop will commence with an overview of Integrated Reporting and its principles by Dr Ian Ball, member of the board of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) and former CEO of International Federation of Accountants. This will be followed by a presentation by Professor Cristiano Busco on the practical implementation of IR at ENI Corporation, a major Italian energy company and a member of the IIRC’s pilot program. This will set out the business case for integrated thinking and reporting and address the practical challenges faced in implementing this practice. After coffee, a panel session including representatives of the Irish business community will lead a discussion on the potential implications of IR for Irish companies, investors and auditors.
