Prof. Bergman has conducted academic research in the U.S. (23 years in Chapel Hill) and the European Union (14 years in Vienna) and maintains an active research program at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration. Projects have ranged from policy to basic studies for UNIDO, OECD, Austrian Ministries, City of Vienna, European Commission, plus seminar presentations for World Bank, USAID, EC-PHARE and similar groups in the U.S., including policy studies for then-governors Clinton (AK) and Hunt (NC). His current research focuses heavily on technological diffusion, academic mobility, commercialization of university research, industrial clusters, regional innovation systems, and infrastructure. Prof. Bergman has initiated several international research exchange programs in the U.S. and EU, and he presently serves as an American representative on the Austrian-American Fulbright Commission.

Prof. Bergman’s Specialties:
Research concerning competitive business regions (multi-factor), business clusters, innovation systems, knowledge transfer and university policy. International academic and research exchange (faculty/student).
Local and regional economic development policy.
