Dr Paddy Gillespie, from the Health Economics and Policy Analysis group at NUI Galway, will host a workshop on behalf of the Health Research Board – Trials Methodology Research Network (HRB-TMRN). This one-day course will provide an in-depth introduction to methods, techniques and use of economic evaluation alongside randomised controlled trials in health care. The course is aimed at those with no, or little, previous training in health economics and will involve a mixture of formal presentations and practical computer-based sessions. The aim of the course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to:
- Understand and implement the methods of economic evaluation alongside randomised controlled trials.
- Understand the issues with respect to the identification, valuation and measurement of cost and health outcome data for economic evaluation alongside randomised controlled trials.
- Understand the issues with respect to the analysis of uncertainty in economic evaluation alongside randomised controlled trials.

Dr Paddy Gillespie is a Lecturer in Economics in the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics at NUI Galway. His research activity is focused in the area of Health Economics and in particular the applied techniques of economic evaluation, including trial-based and decision model-based analysis, and econometrics. His work to date has involved the application of such techniques to explore a variety of questions in relation to heart disease, diabetes, dementia, multimorbidity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, stroke, obesity and infectious disease.
The Health Economics and Policy Analysis group is located in the Discipline of Economics at NUI Galway. The group is part of the research network at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, which includes the Whitaker Institute for Innovation and Societal Change, the Institute for the Lifecourse and Society, and the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology. The aim of the Health Economics and Policy Analysis group is to develop, apply and teach methods for the economic analysis of health and health care. The research focus of the group centres on the techniques of Economic Evaluation, including Health Technology Assessment and Stated Preferences, Applied Health Econometrics, and Health Policy Evaluation. In conjunction with the School of Business and Economics, the group teach an array of modules in Health Economics for a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education programmes.
