Recognising empowered Citizens and Communities can bring about Change in the way we live and the environments we design, this 6th National Social Marketing Conference brings world known social marketing change experts, Professor Gerard Hastings, UK and Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett, Australia, together with researchers and leaders in the public and voluntary sector. The conference examines issues around change and the mutually-reinforcing and integrated strategies and actions required to encourage, support, and enable people to make better choices for themselves and their families (HI, 2014, p.24). Such participatory governance, indeed deliberative democracy innovation, talks to whole-of-the-community and whole-system-in-the-room processes to capture the diversity and distinctiveness of individuals and community stakeholders for democratic problem solving, priority setting, decision making, strategic large-scale action and open collaborative policy making.
Professor Gerard Hastings will talk about Moving Beyond Behaviour Change drawing extensively on his recent books, Marketing Matrix and Social Marketing, from Tunes to Symphonies. Gerard is a Professor at Stirling and the Open University and Professeur Associé at the École des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique in Rennes. He worked in market research before beginning his academic career, which has focused on researching the impact of marketing on society – both for good and ill. This led to the founding of the Institute for Social Marketing and Centre for Tobacco Control Research and has involved him in advising Government and working with policy makers and civil society both nationally and internationally. For example, Gerard was appointed as a Special Advisor to the House of Commons Health Select Committee during its separate enquiries into the tobacco (2000), food (2004), pharmaceutical (2005), and alcohol industries (2010); he has acted as a Temporary Advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) on both communicable and non-communicable disease, and he headed the team that carried out the world’s first systematic review on the impact of food advertising on childhood obesity (later updated twice for the WHO). He has also acted as an expert witness in litigation against the tobacco industry.
Gerard was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2009 for his services to healthcare.
Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett will address Transforming People’s Lives with Apps and Texting Interventions based on her extensive service user research with Queensland Transport, Australian Breastfeeding Association, Australian Red Cross Blood Donation Service and Queensland Health.
Rebekah is a Professor of Marketing at the QUT Business School, Queensland University of Technology Australia. Rebekah is also the National President of the Australian Association for Social Marketing. Rebekah holds a PhD in brand loyalty for the services sector and has published in international journals such as European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Services Marketing, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Brand Management and the Australasian Marketing Journal. Rebekah is the Associate Editor of Journal of Marketing Management (Services and Social Marketing) and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Social Marketing and Journal of Services Marketing.
