This panel event will discuss scaling a technology business; experiences, challenges and lessons learned. The expertise of the panel members allows for an applied and multi-perspective approach on this topic; including the first-hand experience of two tech entrepreneurs (one based in Northern Ireland and one Galway-based) and the expertise of an organisation supporting the acceleration of start-ups.

Paul McElvaney is CEO of the award-winning company – Learning Pool. The elearning company provides online training solutions to over 550 organisations including private businesses and public sector organisations. Learning Pool ranked in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 for the eighth time recently – a list of the fastest growing tech companies in Ireland. The company acquired Mind Click in 2016 and MediaCorp in 2018. |
John Brosnan, CEO of Netfort |
John Brosnan co-founded Netfort in 2002. The company provides software that monitors network traffic and security for virtual and physical networks. The flagship product is LANGuardian that allows businesses to have comprehensive visibility across their networks. In April 2019, Netfort was acquired by Rapid7 – a US security analytics player. |
Mary Ryan , Assistant Director at WestBIC |
Mary Ryan is Assistant Director at WestBIC, which helps entrepreneurs to convert their innovative ideas to marketable products and services. WestBIC supports entrepreneurs through their journey from concept to commercialisation through rapid, immersive and intense mentoring, skills transfer and financing. In particular, WestBIC mentors and supports businesses in becoming investor-ready and sourcing financing for growth.

The panel will be chaired by Dr Majella Giblin who is a lecturer in entrepreneurship and Innovation at NUI Galway. Majella has over 16 years experience in the academic environment and was the first assistant professor in entrepreneurship and innovation at Trinity Business School, TCD, before joining NUI Galway. She has published extensively in the areas of high-tech industrial clusters, international business and innovation. Majella has acted as an advisor to tech start-ups and has worked with industry development agencies such as Enterprise Ireland and the Irish Med Tech Association. Majella also recently contributed to the compilation of a Seanad report (published May 2019) on a strategy to support the development of SMEs in Ireland. |
