Professor Mary Cawley – Whitaker Institute Adjunct Professor of Migration and Rural Societal Change

The Whitaker Institute was delighted to host a celebration on Thursday 29th September in honour of Professor Mary Cawley who was recently appointed Whitaker Institute Adjunct Professor of Migration and Rural Societal Change.  Mary is an active member of the Whitaker Institute and is joint Cluster Leader of the Population and Migration Research Cluster.  Mary is a former Senior Lecturer in Geography and her research interests relate to the geographies of rural social and economic change with particular reference to migration and rural tourism.  Under these headings, she has investigated issues relating to agriculture, population, services and tourism, supervised doctoral research and supervised numerous funded research projects.   On-going research projects focus on two themes: migration to and from Ireland and networks and embeddedness in rural tourism.  Mary’s colleagues from the School of Geography and the Whitaker Institute joined the celebration along with some retired colleagues of Mary’s who we would like to extend a special thanks to for attending.   To mark her appointment Professor John McHale presented Mary with a piece designed by local sculptor Eaman Lochain.
