NUI Galway’s 2020-2025 strategic plan, Shared Vision: Shaped by Values, is built on four core values: respect, openness, excellence, and sustainability. This project focuses on the value of respect and the plan’s flagship goal of developing a Respect Charter for the university. The project aims to generate a detailed and evidence-based understanding of the role of respect at NUI Galway and to devise an implementation framework for embedding the values of respect across NUI Galway based on international best practice and tailored to the university’s specific needs.

The President of NUI Galway, Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh, launched the project at our conference, Embedding Respect in NUI Galway: Developing a Respect Charter.  You can see a video of the event here:  Respect event.

The next phase of the project will involve a series of listening exercises taking place across the University communities to benchmark the cultural status quo at NUI Galway in 2022 and help develop proposals for a Respect Charter and implementation guidelines for moving to a respect-led culture at NUI Galway.

Making Respect a Core Value in Universities

On Wednesday, 27 April 2022, over 100 participants and speakers gathered to attend the project launch of Making Respect a Core Value in Universities. Dr Rachel Hilliard, Dr Shivaun Quinlivan, Dr Lucy Ann Buckley and Dr Deirdre Halloran lead the project to carry out research towards developing a Respect Charter as part of NUI Galway’s Strategy 2020-2025.

This was a hybrid event with speakers and participants taking part both in-person and virtually to discuss the value of Respect. It was opened by the University President Ciarán O hÓgartaigh, and speakers included Niall Crowley, co-founder of the Values Lab; Professor Nandini Ramanujam of McGill University; Patricia King, the General Secretary of ICTU and Senator Alice-Mary Higgins. Helen Maher, Vice President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, closed the session where she made a firm commitment to progress this strategic objective conceptually and practically and to support the implementation of the project’s next phase.
