Biography

Dr. Aoife Duffy is a lecturer in human rights law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland, Galway. Prior to this posting, Dr. Duffy worked as an adjunct lecturer at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University. Dr. Duffy has a professional background in psychiatry and community development.
 
Aoife Duffy holds an honors degree in Applied Psychology from University College Cork, and an M.Phil in International Peace Studies from Trinity College Dublin. After achieving a first in the LLM programme in International Human Rights Law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, Dr. Duffy embarked on the doctorate programme at the Centre, and was awarded her doctorate in 2014 (pass, no corrections). During her academic career Dr. Duffy has received various awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Department of Foreign Affairs scholarship in conflict resolution, and a National University of Ireland fellowship. In 2015, Dr Duffy received an Early Career award to attend the Law and Society Association’s annual meeting in Seattle.
 
Dr. Duffy has published extensively in peer reviewed human rights and interdisciplinary journals, such as the International Journal of Transitional Justice, Law and History Review and the International Journal on Minority and Group Rights. Dr. Duffy is on the review board of the International Journal of Refugee Law and the International Journal of Transitional Justice. A book drawn from her doctoral dissertation, Detention Without Trial in the United Kingdom: From the Age of Empire to the War on Terror, is forthcoming with a top tier academic publishing house.

Legal history; conflict/post-conflict studies; theories of violence; transitional justice; post-colonial scholarship; women’s rights; states of emergency; socio-legal methodologies; constitutional law & sovereignty; public international law; comparative law & legal theory.
