Biography

Dr Amanda Slevin is a sociologist, educator and qualitative researcher who works as a Lecturer with the School of Political Science and Sociology. Amanda has worked in higher education since 2010 and joined NUIG in February 2017, becoming Deputy Director of the MA in Politics and Sociology, a member of two School committees (Teaching and Learning; Public, Professional and Civic Engagement), and a member of the Environment, Development and Sustainability Cluster in the Whitaker Institute. Working with undergraduate and postgraduate students, she delivers modules in sociology of the environment, contemporary Irish society, and research methods. She also co-ordinates a programme of workshops for the MA in Politics and Sociology. 

Amanda holds a PhD in Sociology from University College Dublin, a MA and HDip in Adult and Community Education (both with first class honours) from Maynooth University, and a BA Hons in Community Development (first class honours) from Letterkenny Institute of Technology. She completed postgraduate studies in 'Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development' with the University of Oslo and conducted primary research on Norwegian state hydrocarbon management while in Norway. She has also undertaken a wide range of professional training related to community leadership, youth work, advice and guidance. Amanda's professional experiences mirror her academic interests and she
 has previously worked with the School of Sociology in UCD, the SPHeRE Programme (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland), An Cosán Virtual Community College, Donegal Vocational Education Committee (now Donegal ETB) and several community and voluntary sector organisations. 

Author of Gas, oil and the Irish state: Understanding the dynamics and conflicts of hydrocarbon management (2016, 2017, Manchester University Press) Amanda’s research interests include state hydrocarbon management, Irish political economy, environmental sustainability, ideology and resource management, transformative education and community activism. Amanda is also interested in broader social, economic and political issues within contemporary Irish society and was involved in ‘Generation What’, a pan-European research project on the views and experiences of  nearly one million18-34 year olds. Working with colleagues in UCD's School of Sociology, Amanda was part of the research team that analysed findings of the survey undertaken by over 33,000 young people in Ireland; she also provided analysis of the Irish findings in a RTÉ 2 documentary which was televised in October-November 2017.

Research Interests

Amanda’s research interests include state hydrocarbon management, Irish political economy, environmental sustainability, ideology and resource management, qualitative methods, transformative education and community activism.

Teaching Interests

Amanda is interested in participative and transformative teaching and learning strategies which encourage learners to think critically about pressing societal issues and explore how challenges and inequalities can be addressed. She delivers courses in sociology of the environment, contemporary Irish society and research methods to undergraduate students. She also provides workshops to MA students around group work, research and thesis preparation, and research troubleshooting.
