Event Navigation

The forum is a one-day event for PhD students of the Colleges of Business, Public Policy & Law, and Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies, and who may be associated with the Whitaker Institute.  This event is aimed at PhD candidates at all stages of their research.

The purpose of the day is to facilitate PhD students from both colleges to learn about others’ research and approaches, to celebrate PhD work, to discuss PhD queries, and to provide encouragement from first year through to completion, submission, and Viva.  The event is an opportunity for students at all stages of their PhDs to meet with and interact with other PhD students, and to hear from PhD supervisors, recent PhD graduates, and PhD examiners, so that experiences and best practices might be shared.

There are two key sections to the day:

  • In the morning, PhD students will interact with each other to discuss issues and queries they have at any stage during the PhD process. A panel of PhD supervisors from across the two Colleges will provide their perspectives on students’ questions and queries.
  • In the afternoon, the focus will shift to the PhD viva, and students will learn about the viva procedure and regulations, as well as receiving helpful tips and advice about the viva experience from recent graduates. PhD students at all stages of their PhD are invited to attend the sessions about the Viva.

The day will also include a poster display of PhD research in the Hardiman Foyer.   Students are advised the following:

  • PhD students who have already had posters printed for the recent Whitaker Institute Research Day are encouraged to bring their posters to the Hardiman Research Building foyer on the evening of 24th May, and we will provide a stand to display the poster again.  PhD students wishing to do so should contact Angela Sice by Monday 9th May to reserve a stand for their poster.
  • PhD students who have not had a poster printed for the Whitaker Research Day and who would like their work to be included in the poster display at the PhD forum should contact Angela Sice with the title of their poster by Monday 9th May.  The Whitaker Institute will support the printing of new PhD posters.

The deadline for registration is Monday 16th May.
