SEMRU Seminar ‘Linking Maritime Security and Ocean Development – A Small Island Developing State Perspective’ by Dr Robert McCabe

Maritime Security and Ocean Development are two of the major frameworks for the contemporary discussion of ocean governance. Traditionally, both agendas have been pursued separately. Increasing recognition of the interlinkages between these issues has resulted in more cross-cutting approaches. This presentation will explore concepts of maritime security and the so-called blue economy using the Seychelles as a paradigm. In addition – using Marine Spatial Planning and integrated coastal zone management as a lens – it will comparatively explore how enforcement and regulation might be approached within new maritime spaces in both the Seychelles and Ireland.
