The ‘Inaugural Professors In Conversation Series’ featuring newly appointed Business Professors at NUI Galway will continue its series with Esther Tippmann, Professor of Strategy, Leadership and Change, on Wednesday, 6 November. Professor Tippmann will talk about Developing subsidiaries in Ireland. The lunchtime event hosted by the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics and Whitaker Institute is free and open to the public.

Foreign direct investments are critical to the Irish economy. Professor Tippmann will discuss the challenges and opportunities for developing subsidiaries. She will draw on research-based insights how managers in subsidiaries can deliver value beyond their mandate, develop innovative solutions within a complex organizational setting and develop their roles and mandates. The talk will deliver insights for well-established subsidiaries and subsidiaries of young scaling firms. Professor Esther Tippmann will be in conversation with Mark Gantly, President of the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland, Senior R&D Director at Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Esther Tippmann is Professor of Strategy, Leadership and Change. Before joining NUI Galway, she was a faculty member at University College Dublin and Research Fellow at Grenoble Ecole de Management, France. Esther’s research and teaching interests revolve around the strategic challenges of internationally operating organizations. She has worked closely with several multinational corporations in Ireland, France, U.K. and the U.S. on case studies and research projects. She has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Organization Studies, Journal of World Business, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning and Global Strategy Journal. Her research received several honours, including awards and nominations from the Academy of Management, Academy of International Business and Strategic Management Society. Esther currently serves as Senior Editor for the Journal of World Business and on the editorial boards of the Journal of International Business Studies and Long Range Planning. She held a Marie-Curie Fellowship, funded by the European Commission and Irish Research Council. Esther has taught in the areas of Strategic Management, Global Strategy, International Business, and Qualitative Research across all levels, including executives, in Ireland, Germany and France.

Mark Gantly is a Senior R&D Director at Hewlett Packard Enterprise and also served as Galway Site Leader from 2009 -2018. He has been a board member of the American Chamber of Commerce since 2012 and is the 2019 President. He has first-hand knowledge of the development of US multinational subsidiaries in Ireland and is well-equipped to facilitate a dialog with Prof Tippmann on her research. Mark is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (B.A., B.A.I.) and has a Diploma in Business Strategy from the IMI.
