Creating and sustaining local communities

profile-Kevin LeydenProfessor Kevin Leyden was a keynote speaker at Dream to Dare: Gamechanging Communities in Indianapolis, in the US in December 2013.  In his address, he spoke about social capital and the built environment.  Researchers agree that social networks and community involvement have positive consequences, including longer lifespans and improved physical and mental health. In this session, Professor Leyden shared findings regarding the built environment: pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use neighborhoods and the correlation to social engagement and social capital. He challenges all to be active participants, rather than bystanders, in creating livable communities to unleash the community spirit.

Professor Kevin Leyden also spoke at Ireland’s first Rural Community Retail Conference, Counter Revolution on why local shops are important to local communities.  The conference took place on the 21st of March in Horse and Jockey, Co Tipperary.
