As part of the ongoing series on agile development, the AGILE FORUM is delighted to have Jeff Patton, an internationally recognized expert in agile product development, as our main speaker for this event. Jeff’s area of focus is on holistic product design, including incorporating user experience as part of an agile process. Jeff is visiting Galway this week working with some teams from Cisco Systems, and has kindly agreed to speak at one of our ITAG Agile Forum events.

Over the last 10 years, in organizations mired in heavy process and paralyzing analysis and design phases, we´ve seen agile approaches get delivery of working software moving again. But, it turns out that successful delivery doesn´t result in successful products. And, for most organizations building software, it was the successful product they´d wanted all along.

In this short talk Jeff Patton explores process where the primary goal is a successful product. He´ll discuss the values and principles common in healthy product organizations that aren´t the primary focus of agile development. You´ll hear examples of innovative practice emerging from companies that subscribe to agile approaches while remaining true to their organization´s values and driving towards the primary goal of delivering products people want.

Jeff will be giving this talk the following week at the XP2010 International Conference on Agile Software Development in Norway.

Biography:
Jeff Patton is an independent consultant, teacher, and Agile coach dedicated to the holistic design and development of successful software products.

Jeff has designed and built software for the past 15 years on a wide variety of products from on-line aircraft parts ordering to electronic medical records. Jeff has focused on Agile approaches since working on an early Extreme Programming team in 2000. In particular Jeff has specialized in the application of user experience design practice to improve Agile requirements, planning, and ultimately the products delivered.

Jeff currently works as an independent consultant, agile process coach, product design process coach, and instructor. Current articles, essays, and presentations on variety of topics in Agile product development can be found at www.AgileProductDesign.com and in Alistair Cockburn´s Crystal Clear. Jeff is founder and list moderator of the agile-usability Yahoo discussion group, a columnist with StickyMinds.com and IEEE Software, a Certified Scrum Trainer, and winner of the Agile Alliance´s 2007 Gordon Pask Award for contributions to Agile Development.

Agile Network of Excellence (5 minutes)
Kieran Conboy, NUIG

Kieran will give a brief overview of the Agile Network project – a formal research project for which he is the Principal Investigator. The goal of the project is to establish a network of excellence in agile and lean development between local, national and international partners in research and industry.

Research: Decision Making in Agile Teams (10 minutes)
Dr. Tom Acton and Dr. Meghann Drury, Centre for Innovation and Structural Change, NUI Galway

Tom and Meghann will give a brief overview of their research on decision making in agile teams, and will describe how interested companies can get involved.
